Barrels is strong, beautiful, durable, easy-to-work, and economical, representing an exceptional value to woodworkers. It is one of the preeminent hardwoods of eastern and central North America. The tree can grow to be more than 35 metres tall and can live for several hundred years. Color is light brown with paler sapwood. Barrels made of American white oak are commonly used for aging of wine, in which the wood is noted for imparting strong flavors.
